Spinal Curves - Normal Versus Abnormal
A normal cervical curve allows for the proper function of the nervous system. Given that the nervous system controls almost everything such as behavior, cognition, memory, emotions, metabolism, homeostasis, digestion, respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, and much more, NORMAL bone alignment and curvatures are EXTREMELY important.
How does one lose this curve you ask?
Besides the classic whiplash injury from motor vehicle accident (MVA), or severe falls and traumas, losing the cervical curve may usually be caused by activities of daily living. This includes computer work, reading, cooking, studying, sleeping with wrong size pillows, video games, texting, and the list goes on and on….. People do not focus on posture and ergonomics allowing for instability of muscles and ligaments to occur, thus permitting abnormal curvature to take place. This is why x-rays by your chiropractor are essential , especially for students who constantly carry backpacks, study, and do computer work.
Abnormal alignment of the spine not only disrupts the nervous system from the optimal function but also causes physical stress that ultimately leads to early degenerative changes to the bones and discs. This happens because atypical alignment allows for bone movement deficiency. Discs get fed from the bone above and below through normal bone movement to get the nutrients they need to stay healthy. If the bones lack proper movement, the discs do not get fed causing disc degeneration and may lead to disc herniation.
