Digestive Problems and Chiropractic
Most of us are very, very familiar with the symptoms those people are dancing about in the video, huh? Heartburn, abdominal pain, ulcers, nausea, diarrhea, and indigestion (to name a few) are in epidemic proportions these days. The litany of advertisements we see — just like the one above — prove it. While an emergency dash to your local pharmacy might be enough for occasional tummy trouble, chronic sufferers are in definite need of something a bit more substantial in order to find relief.
Home remedies are many and varied, from the over-the-counter to the homeopathic. Step into any Walgreens to find an entire aisle of quick fixes for a troublesome stomach. Not a fan of chalky tablets? Don’t like the idea of adding unwanted chemicals to your body? It can be as simple as eating better! Walk into any health food store these days and you’ll find yourself a wide selection of probiotic foods. Our guts have colonies of tiny bacteria that do all the hard digestion work and emerging studies, such as one done at the University of Alberta in Canada (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26447965) suggest we can heal stomach troubles such as ulcerative colitis by keeping our gut flora flourishing. How can we add more probiotics? There are countless supplements on the market but you can also get the bacteria you need from fermented foods and beverage like yogurt (and it’s cousin kefir), sauerkraut, kimchee, and more!
But here’s the harsh reality -- you can have a thriving colony of bacteria in your intestines and still suffer from chronic bowel irritations. What gives?
In a controlled study in a hospital setting, doctors Andrei Pikalov, M.D., and Vyatcheslav Kharin, M.D., examined the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustment in the treatment of ulcers. Sixteen men and women took part in the study comparing conventional medical care to chiropractic treatment, otherwise known as spinal manipulation. The results revealed that the spinal manipulation group healed an average of ten days faster than the medical group, which was confirmed by an endoscopic examination. Think about that -- the patients receiving regular chiropractic adjustments had a whole ten days extra of feeling better compared with their medical treatment counterparts. That’s a week and a half. Think of how much could be done with that much time -- time that would have otherwise been spent suffering!
Other studies on digestive problems have shown equally positive responses with chiropractic care. How is this possible? How can getting our spines adjusted affect the health of our bowels? Remember that system of nerves -- almost like telephone lines across the country -- connecting our brains to the farthest points of our bodies? It controls the function of every cell, tissue, and organ. When a misalignment is causing a roadblock it keeps the brain from communicating with your gut and prevents proper healing. Pretty simple.
At Carpe Diem Chiropractic in Fort Lauderdale FL, we don’t treat the digestive problems; we remove the interference in the nervous system and allow the body to heal itself naturally -- because all of our bodies already have the ability to do that. This is why so many people are turning to chiropractic as part of their path to health and wellness! It is imperative that you maintain a healthy nervous system to retain a healthy body and regular chiropractic adjustments help you do just that.
